Program Aide: Homework Assistant, Grades 6-8
Program Description:
  • Academic year: September through June
  • Mondays through Thursdays, 3:00pm – 6:30pm; Saturday mornings (flexible scheduling) (10 hours per week)
  • Academic assistance in core subjects (Math, Reading, English, Social Studies, Science and Test Prep
 
Job Responsibilities:
  • Assess and assist students in core subjects.
  • Assist students in test preparation.
  • Document and report student progress.
  • Oversee study hall activities, including: monitoring and reviewing homework and classroom behavior
  • Attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings
  • Communicate academic progress to program staff
  • Complete and submit required documentation
  • Escort and chaperone students on local field trips
 
Job Requirements:
  • College Student currently enrolled in an accredited, four-year program
  • Experience working with middle school students
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff
  • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy.

Saturday Academy Math and English Teachers, Grades 6-8
Summary:

Saturday Academy teachers develop and implement student-centered, interactive math or English curriculum that culminates in group projects and presentations. Sample courses include, Voting Counts: Election 2008, Harlem’s Inconvenient Truth, and Extra, Extra! Though math and English will be taught separately, collaboration between instructors will be necessary in order to help students make connections across the curricula. The ideal candidates will be able to utilize progressive didactic, coaching and discussion instruction models to teach content area using creative and innovative methods. Teachers document and assess student progress throughout the course. The ability to create a safe and rich learning environment is essential.

  • Academic Enrichment and Acceleration in Mathematics, English and College Preparation
 

Job Requirements:
  • B.A. in education, math, English, Social Studies or related field (M.A. preferred)
  • NYC/NYS certification in English or Mathematics or significantly experienced
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in middle school or high school
  • Experience in cooperative learning groups and inquiry-based learning techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Impeccable classroom management skills
  • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosoph
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff
  • Ability and willingness to commit to entire program

The ideal candidate will be able to utilize progressive didactic, coaching and discussion instruction models to teach content area using creative and innovative methods. Teachers document and assess student progress throughout the year-long program. The ability to create a safe and rich learning environment is essential.

  • Academic year: January 2009 - May 2009

After School English/Writing Instructors, Grades: 9 & 10
Summary:

Academic Elective teachers develop and implement student-centered, interactive English/Writing classes that culminate in group projects and/or presentations. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize progressive didactic, coaching and discussion instruction models to teach content area using creative and innovative methods. Teachers document and assess student progress throughout the semester-long program. The ability to create a safe and rich learning environment is essential. Classes will focus on developing a critical essay and the writing process, including editing, peer review and constructive feedback. 

Program Description:

  • 10 week course January-March or March-May
  • Once per week, Monday or Tuesday, after-school hours 4:00 pm – 7:00pm
  • Academic Enrichment and Acceleration in English/Writing 

Job Requirements:

  • B.A. in education, English, or related field (M.A. preferred)
  • NYC/NYS certification or significantly experienced
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in high school or college
  • Experience in cooperative learning groups and inquiry-based learning techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Impeccable classroom management skills
  • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff
  • Ability and willingness to commit to entire program

Salary: Competitive, $30 - $42/hour instructional time (based on experience) and $15/hour administrative time.

After-School Humanities Teachers (Music & History), Grades: 9-10
Summary:

Academic elective teachers develop and implement student-centered, interactive humanities classes that culminate in group projects and presentations. This course will explore three constructs of the theme of love. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize progressive didactic, coaching and discussion instruction models to teach content area using creative and innovative methods. Teachers document and assess student progress throughout the semester-long program. The ability to create a safe and rich learning environment is essential. Classes will explore various liberation movements around the globe via an examination of the music surrounding such struggles.

Program Description:
  • Spring Semester: January through May
  • Once per week, Wednesday, after-school hours 4:00 pm – 7:00pm
  • Academic Enrichment and Acceleration in the Humanities 

Job Requirements:

  • B.A. in education, history, sociology, music, or related field (M.A. preferred)
  • NYC/NYS certification or significantly experienced
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in high school or college
  • Experience in cooperative learning groups and inquiry-based learning techniques
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Impeccable classroom management skills
  • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy
